Recently, Alan was honored to be a guest soloist for Arizona State University’s premiere performance of Arthur Honegger’s Concerto da Camera. Before relocating to Arizona, Alan was Associate Principal Flute with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Camerata Orchestra, and the Terre Haute Symphony. His solo appearances with these and Indiana University’s various ensembles included performances of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, Antonio Vivaldi’s Goldfinch Concerto and Piccolo Concerto in C Major, W.A. Mozart’s Concerti in G Major, D Major, and for Flute and Harp, as well as the premiere performance of Avner Dorman’s Piccolo Concerto.

As an avid and passionate chamber musician, not only did Alan perform regularly with his woodwind quintet, harp and flute duo, and string quartet in Indiana, but was featured in Indiana University’s premiere performances of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae. Alan was also the preferred flutist for world premiere compositions by Indiana University’s Composition Department, collaborating regularly with both emerging composers and faculty members on groundbreaking new works. Notably, his award-winning performance of Elizabeth Ogonek’s Szymborska Poems remains a highlight of his career.

As a passionate advocate for flute education and innovation, Alan co-founded and produced the internationally-known podcast series “PorterFlute Pod” hosted by flutist Amy Porter that’s in its 8th season to date. In addition to being a board member for the Arizona Flute Society and co-chairing the 2026 annual Festival and Competition,  he is also a frequent adjudicator for Arizona Flute Society’s competitions and serves as a coach for Mesa Community College’s annual Flute Regional Etude Day, inspiring the next generation of flutists.

Alan has been privileged to perform in masterclasses with legendary flutists such as Sir James Galway, Elizabeth Mann, Anna Dina Schick, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Amy Porter, and holds a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Indiana University, where he studied under Thomas Robertello. Additional mentors include Kathryn Lukas, Doriot Anthony Dwyer, Susan Milan, Elizabeth Rowe, Cynthia Meyers, and Viviana Cumplido Wilson. Alan performs on a custom 14K gold Haynes flute, a Burkart Global piccolo with a grenadilla wave-style Mancke head joint, and Pearl alto flute.
