
Competitive Performers
The competitive portion of the festival is open to all Arizona Flute Society Members* as outlined below. Please see the Repertoire List button above for the required repertoire each Competitive Division.
Debut Division: Grades 6 and under
Junior High Division: Grades 7, 8, 9
Senior High Division: Grades 10, 11, 12
Adult Enthusiast Division: 18+ competitors who don't have and are not working towards a music performance degree
Distinguished Artist Division: 18+ competitors that are currently enrolled in OR graduated with a music performance degree
Orchestra Audition Division: 18+ competitors that are currently enrolled in OR graduated with a music performance degree
The winners of the Debut Division will be awarded the following:
Milano Music Grand Prize: $50 Milano's Music gift card + 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
Milano Music 2nd Place Prize: $25 Milano's Music gift card + 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
Milano Music 3rd Place Prize: $25 Milano's Music gift card + 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
The winners of the Junior Division will be awarded the following:
1st Place: $50 & 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
2nd Place: $25 & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
3rd Place: $25 & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
The winners of the Senior Division will be awarded the following:
Wm. S. Haynes Co. Grand Prize: $200 & 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
2nd Place: $100 & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
3rd Place: $75 & 25% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
The winners of the Distinguished Artist Division will be awarded the following:
Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company Grand Prize: $400 & 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
ALRY Publications 2nd Place Prize: $300 & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
ALRY Publications 3rd Place Prize: $200 & 25% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
The winners of the Orchestra Audition Division will be awarded the following:
Brannen Brothers Flutemakers Inc. 1st Place: $300 & 1 complementary lesson with Viviana Cumplido Wilson (Principal Flute with The Phoenix Symphony) & 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
Brannen Brothers Flutemakers Inc. 2nd Place: $200 & 1 complementary lesson with Brian Gordon (former Associate Principal Flute/Piccolo with The Phoenix Symphony) & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
The winners of the Adult Enthusiast Division will be awarded the following:
1st Place: $75 & 100% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
2nd Place: $50 & 50% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop
3rd Place: $25 & 25% scholarship to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop

Piano accompaniment is required for all performances in the Competitive category unless the selected piece is written for solo unaccompanied flute.

Adult Enthusiasts may select any flute or piccolo solo that is a maximum of 10 minutes duration.

Pieces can only be performed in the division they are assigned. If a contestant wishes to perform repertoire from a higher division, he/she must compete in the more advanced division. Please see the Repertoire List button above for the required repertoire.

If there are fewer than 3 competitors in a division, only 1st place will be awarded. If there are fewer than 4 competitors, only 1st and 2nd place will be awarded (with the exception of the Orchestra Audition Division which will have only 2 winner maximum).
* Note: Registrants must be domiciled in the State of AZ, a student at a grade school, junior or senior high school, and/or be enrolled in a state college or university to be eligible to compete. Registrants must also have an active 2025-2026 AFS membership to register for the Flute Festival and Competition.

Festival Performer (Non-Competitive) Division
The non-competitive division of the AFS Flute Festival is open to Arizona Flute Society Members* of all ages.
Performances can include flute solos, piccolo solos, low flute solos, and flute ensembles. Participants may perform a piece of their choice lasting no more than 7 minutes.
Piano accompaniment is optional for non-competitive performances.
Non-competitive performers will receive a Certificate of Participation and judges' comment sheets.
