The Central Arizona Flute Ensemble (CAFE) commissioned valley composer David Duarte to arrange a medley of big band tunes for flute choir. Scored for one piccolo, 2 C flutes, 2 alto flutes, bass flute, and contrabass flute, the arrangement features “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and “Take the “A" Train.” “This piece fills a gap in flute choir repertoire,” says CAFE manager Leslie Etzel. “We are very pleased that David highlighted the special tone quality of each of the flutes, and used such varied textures. Old-style jazz sounds great in a flute choir!" Founded in 2007, CAFE specializes in performances for audiences in all types of senior communities and for the general public. Last year, the group played at over fifteen senior homes as well as at the Desert Botanical Gardens, Tempe History Museum, and the Glendale Public Library. The members are: Leslie Etzel (manager), Tim Solarz, Nora Welsh, Danielle Walters, Susan Borgers, Sue Norton-Scott, and Rhonda Bowen. You can learn more and listen to their music at www.cafeflutes.com. The Big Band Medley will be premiered on Sunday, March 5 at 3:00 at the Chaparral High School, 6935 E. Gold Dust Avenue, Scottsdale. CAFE will play prior to the Scottsdale Concert Band's spring performance. The doors will open at 2:30. We hope you can attend this world premiere and enjoy the newest addition to flute choir music!
